Scenic Gardens

Nelson is spoilt for choice with a number of beautiful gardens open to the public.

The Queens Gardens was founded to commemorate the 50th jubilee of Queen Victoria’s coronation. The Gardens have extensive Māori colonial and Victorian history and are an outstanding example of a Victorian ornamental public garden. Meander the water fountains, quaint footbridges, flower displays and more at the Queen’s Gardens.

For a totally different and serene experience The Miyazu Japanese Gardens are free to visit and a locals favourite. The garden is full of reflective ponds, beautiful fountains and unspoiled foliage including beautiful bonsai specimens.

Gardens of the world showcase rare and exotic plants from around the world in 6 acres of beautiful gardens.

Nelson Market

Nelson Market is held every Saturday in Montgomery Square and has now been operating for over 30 years. This vibrant market is bursting with enthusiatic vendors eager to share and showcase their wares. Offerings include handmadearts and crafts, farmers market fresh produce, artisan foods and more.

Take time to socialize with stall holders and other shoppers and browsers. There's sure to be something for everyone here.

World of Wearable Art & Classic Cars Museum

The National World of Wearable Art (WOW) Museum showcases two very distinct collections that collide in a celebration of design, innovation and wonder.

Where else in the world can you see a stunning selection of more than 50 wearable art garments, alongside more than 140 veteran, vintage and classic cars?

The WOW exhibition allows visitors to examine the garments in detail. The  Classic Car Collection displays a stunning range of cars dating from 1908 -  all in immaculate condition.

McCashin's Brewery Tour

Experience the rich and vibrant history of the McCashin’s Brewery first-hand with a tour of their facilities. Smell the enticing aroma of Nelson’s finest hops and their own bespoke yeast. Watch the brewers in action as they relate the tale of New Zealand’s craft brewing revolution! You’ll get a unique insight into the passion and determination that’s gone into producing one of the country’s finest suites of beverages.

Your tour guide will take you through the history of the brewery, the process to create McCashin's fine Stoke and Rochdale products, and show you the features of the brewery. At the end of the tour you’ll have the opportunity to sample a range of their beer and cider and each participant will be given a souvenir glass.

The Suter Art Gallery

The Suter Art Gallery provides free entry to all, all year round. Dedicated to art browse the current exhibition, relax in the cafe or treat yourself  in the gift shop.

The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū is a memorial to the second Bishop of Nelson, Andrew Burn Suter (1830-1895). Bishop Suter enjoyed artistic pursuits as a recreational painter and collector of art.

Bishop Suter's wife Amelia gifted some land, money and Bishop Suter’s art collection as the founding donation to establish the gallery.

Tahunanui Beach

Tahunanui Beach, or Tahuna Beach as it is commonly known, is great for swimming and is a popular recreation area for windsurfing, jogging, walking, sun worshipping and more.

The beach is a popular place, especially during the summer, with the beach well suited to family usage. There are a wide range of other activities in the ‘fun park’ immediately adjacent to the beach, and good facilities are provided.

The beach is patrolled by Nelson Surf Life Saving Club in the weekends of the summer months.

Hoglund Glass Gallery

Höglund Art Glass is a leading source of art glass NZ. Their art gallery and glass store is a 20-minute drive from Nelson City and well worth the trip.

Visitors will enjoy strolling inside their glassblowing studio. Glass is blown most days a week. Find out how they craft their glass masterpieces through glassblowing demonstrations.

The glass gallery houses handcrafted unique glass and glass jewellery. On display are glass masterpieces in striking designs from complex glass techniques.
